It is because of this change in the concentration of calcium and magnesium that the softening properties of the water are lowered. Resin beads used in water softening systems come in different shapes and sizes. It depends on the type of resin used on the beads and its size to determine its potential effectiveness as a solution to the problem of hardness. Resin beads have a porous surface that allows water molecules to pass through them easily without being softened. When a bead-sized resin is mixed with water, it will form a thin film as a result of the interaction of water molecules and the resin molecules. This thin film then starts to grow bigger as it is exposed to more water until finally it gets to the final size that can be dissolved by hand or by using special equipment for the resin bead treatment.


To do the treatment, you need to have access to some tools and chemicals that are sold at hardware stores and plumbing supply shops. One of the most important things you need are the ion exchange salts. These salts are basically just salt crystals which have been ionized so that they can produce the exchange ions which are needed to soften water. What you need to do first is to make a mixture of water and the salt in order for it to be properly prepared for use as a replacement for the hardness minerals in your water softener. For this you need to add about one teaspoon of the salt to a gallon of water.


There are also some water softeners that require electricity in order to function, but they are still better than those that need water softeners using resin beads. The electricity-powered systems work by passing an electrical current through the water softener components. These ions are then exchanged with the ions produced by the salt in the resin beads.
